ASME B18.9 Carbon Steel Plow Bolts
Jiaxing Sini Fastener Co., Ltd. manufactures Plow Bolts to ASME B18.9 in carbon steel, with a No.3 regular round head and square neck that seats into the mounting hole and resists rotation under vibration and shear load. The range covers 1/4" to 3/4" thread sizes and 1" to 10" lengths, supplied in A307 and SAE J429 GR2, GR5 and GR8.
These bolts are built for ground-engaging and high-wear joints: plow shares, harrow discs, cultivator shanks, tiller tines, harvester guards and scraper blades. Because the square neck locks the bolt in the plate, one operator can tighten the assembly from the nut side without a second wrench holding the head.
Where Our Plow Bolts Fit
Agricultural equipment takes the majority of our plow bolt output. The countersunk head sits flush or slightly proud of the wear plate, so soil, stalks and residue slide over the joint instead of catching on a protruding hex head. The same geometry is used on earth-moving blades, snow plow edges, and conveyor or chute liners where a smooth wear surface matters.
- Ground-engaging tools: plow shares, sweeps, chisel points, disc harrow blades, subsoiler points.
- Harvesting equipment: combine guards, cutterbar sections, feeder and auger wear plates.
- Earth-moving and road maintenance: dozer and loader cutting edges, scraper blades, snow plow moldboards.
- Material handling: hopper liners, chute wear plates, bucket lips where a flush head is required.
Head Styles and Neck Geometry
Head and neck geometry decide whether a plow bolt will seat correctly in a given plate. We produce the No.3 regular round head as the standard configuration, and can supply countersunk and square-neck variants where the drawing calls for them. The square neck length must match the plate thickness at the hole; if the neck is too short the bolt spins, and if it is too long the head will not pull down against the plate.

Materials, Grades and Finishes
Standard production is carbon steel. Grade selection follows the load case: A307 and SAE J429 GR2 suit general assembly, while GR5 and GR8 are specified where the joint carries higher tensile or shear demand. We confirm the grade on the drawing before tooling is set, because grade affects both the material and the heat-treatment route.
- Black oxide: a thin, dimensional-stable finish for indoor machinery and painted assemblies.
- Zinc plating: general corrosion protection for equipment stored outdoors or washed down regularly.
- Hot-dip galvanized: the usual choice for soil contact, manure handling and long-term outdoor exposure.
Hot-dip galvanizing adds coating thickness on the thread, so we match the nut and tap tolerance to the finished bolt rather than the bare thread. Where a specific coating weight or salt-spray duration is required, we test the finished part in our salt spray chamber and report the result with the shipment.

Installation and Joint Practice
A plow bolt is only as good as its seating. The square hole in the wear plate must be punched or drilled to the correct square dimension, and the countersink angle must match the head. During assembly the neck is drawn into the square hole; once seated, the head cannot turn and the nut can be run down from the opposite side.
- Check that the square neck length equals the plate thickness at the hole, allowing for coating build-up.
- Use a hardened washer under the nut on soft or thin plates to spread the clamping load.
- Torque to the value for the selected grade and thread size; over-torquing a GR2 bolt can yield the shank before the joint is tight.
- Re-check torque after the first operating hours on ground-engaging equipment, then at scheduled service intervals.
Quality Control and Acceptance
Inspection runs after each production process, and finished plow bolts are checked against the customer's requirements and the applicable standard before packing. Our laboratory equipment includes a universal testing machine, tensile testing machine, hardness tester, optical emission spectrometer, metallographic microscope, video measuring system and salt spray test chamber. Dimensional checks cover head diameter and height, square neck dimensions, thread pitch diameter and length; mechanical checks cover tensile and proof load, hardness and, where specified, coating weight.
We are an ISO 9001 certified fastener manufacturer, and inspection records can be issued with the shipment for incoming-goods acceptance at your plant. Where a third-party inspection or a pre-shipment witness test is part of the contract, we schedule it into the production plan.

Information We Use to Configure Your Solution
To quote a plow bolt accurately we need the working point, not just a diameter. The following inputs let us confirm tooling, grade, coating and packing before we commit to a production slot.
- Drawing or sample with head style, square neck dimensions and overall length.
- Thread size and thread form (inch UNC or metric).
- Grade and any required mechanical property values.
- Coating type and, if relevant, salt-spray duration.
- Plate thickness at the hole, so neck length can be verified.
- Quantity per size, annual volume and delivery schedule.
- Packaging format, labelling and any inspection documentation required.
Custom parts are developed from customer drawings or samples, and most items are available in steel and stainless steel in both inch and metric sizes. Our bolt production covers diameters from 3/16" to 1 1/2" (5–52 mm) and lengths from 1/2" to 60" (10–1500 mm), so a plow bolt programme can be combined with other fasteners on the same order.
Frequently Asked Questions
What sizes of plow bolts do you manufacture?
Our ASME B18.9 plow bolts run from 1/4" to 3/4" thread size and 1" to 10" length, in A307 and SAE J429 GR2, GR5 and GR8. Non-standard lengths and metric equivalents can be produced from drawings.
Which finish should I choose for soil-contact equipment?
Hot-dip galvanized is the usual specification for soil contact, manure handling and long-term outdoor exposure. Zinc plating suits general outdoor use, and black oxide is appropriate for indoor machinery or painted assemblies where coating thickness must stay minimal.
Can you produce plow bolts to our own drawing?
Yes. We develop and produce from customer drawings or samples, including head geometry, square neck dimensions, grade and coating. Send the drawing with the plate thickness at the hole so we can verify neck fit before tooling.
How is quality verified before shipment?
Inspection follows each production process, and finished bolts are checked dimensionally and mechanically against the order requirements and the applicable standard. Our laboratory includes tensile and universal testing machines, hardness tester, optical emission spectrometer, metallographic microscope, video measuring system and salt spray chamber, and records can be issued with the shipment.
What is the typical response time for a plow bolt inquiry?
We respond to inquiries within 12 hours on weekdays. A complete drawing, grade, coating and quantity list lets us return a firm configuration and quotation in that first reply.
Do you supply matching nuts and washers?
Yes. Nuts and washers are produced within the same fastener programme, so plow bolts, hex nuts and hardened washers can be supplied as a matched set with consistent coating and thread tolerance.
