Carbon steel bolts are the quiet workhorses of modern assembly. They hold together building frames, machinery, electrical enclosures, furniture, and countless other products. If you are sourcing carbon steel bolts, the real challenge is not finding a supplier. It is confirming that grade, coating, dimensions, and documentation all match the job.
At SINI Fastener, we have been manufacturing and exporting bolts and screws since 2004. Our company profile describes more than 20 years of fastener experience, with production facilities in Haiyan, Zhejiang and Lianyungang, Jiangsu. We serve customers in North America, South America, and Europe across construction hardware, machinery, machine tools, electrical appliances, and furniture. This guide shares practical points we discuss with buyers every day.
Carbon steel offers a practical balance of strength, cost, and manufacturability. Low-carbon and medium-carbon steels can be cold headed, threaded, heat treated, and coated at scale. That makes carbon steel bolts suitable for high-volume standard parts as well as custom engineered fasteners.
Compared with stainless steel, carbon steel bolts usually provide higher tensile strength at a lower material cost. The trade-off is corrosion resistance. Carbon steel needs an appropriate coating or a controlled environment to perform well. For many indoor, automotive, machinery, and structural applications, a coated carbon steel bolt is the most efficient choice.
Grade is the first thing to verify on any carbon steel bolt quote. A grade or property class tells you the material, heat treatment, and minimum mechanical properties. Without it, two bolts can look identical and perform very differently.
| Grade or Class | Typical Material | Approximate Tensile Strength | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 2 | Low carbon steel | 74 ksi | General purpose, light duty |
| Grade 5 | Medium carbon steel, quenched and tempered | 120 ksi | Machinery, automotive, structural |
| Grade 8 | Medium carbon alloy steel, quenched and tempered | 150 ksi | Heavy equipment, high-load joints |
| Class 4.8 | Low carbon steel | 400 MPa | General metric assembly |
| Class 8.8 | Medium carbon steel, quenched and tempered | 800 MPa | Machinery, structural, automotive |
| Class 10.9 | Alloy steel, quenched and tempered | 1040 MPa | High-strength metric joints |
Head markings matter. A Grade 5 bolt usually carries three radial lines, while Grade 8 bolts show six radial lines. Metric bolts use property class numbers such as 8.8 or 10.9. Buyers should also confirm material certificates, hardness results, proof load, and tensile test reports. For a deeper review of grade selection and coating choices, see our notes on carbon steel bolts grades and coatings.
SINI Fastener manufactures products to DIN and IFI standards and can also produce to customer-specific designs and drawings. That flexibility helps when a project needs a standard bolt with a non-standard length, thread, or finish.
Corrosion protection is the second major decision after grade. Carbon steel bolts can be supplied with several finishes, and each one fits a different environment. The right choice depends on indoor or outdoor exposure, humidity, chemicals, and expected service life.
Do not specify a coating by color alone. Buyers should state coating type, thickness, and salt spray requirement. For outdoor construction hardware, hot-dip galvanizing is a common choice. For indoor machinery and electrical appliances, zinc plating may be sufficient. Our quality control lab includes a salt spray test chamber, which helps verify coating performance before shipment.
Carbon steel bolts are available in inch and metric systems. Mixing them is one of the most common sourcing errors. A 1/2 inch bolt is not the same as an M12 bolt, even if they look close. Thread pitch, head size, and wrench clearance also differ.
| Dimension System | Common Standards | Typical Markings | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inch | ASME B18.2.1, ASTM A307, A325 | Grade 2, 5, 8 | 1/2-13 x 3 in hex bolt |
| Metric | DIN 931, DIN 933, ISO 4014, ISO 4017 | Class 4.8, 8.8, 10.9 | M12 x 80 hex bolt |
SINI Fastener produces bolts in diameters from 3/16 inch to 1 1/2 inch, or 5 mm to 52 mm, and lengths from 1/2 inch to 60 inch, or 10 mm to 1500 mm. Our screw range covers #4 to 1/2 inch, or 3.5 mm to 12 mm, with the same length range. Most products can be supplied in steel or stainless steel, and we can work with inch and metric requirements. Custom bolts can be manufactured according to customer drawings and specific designs.
Carbon steel bolts are not one product. They include carriage bolts, round head bolts, hex bolts, heavy hex bolts, plow bolts, timber bolts, elevator bolts, and many other designs. Each family solves a different assembly problem.
Carriage bolts have a smooth round head and a square neck that bites into wood or metal. They are widely used in construction hardware, furniture, and agricultural equipment. Our carriage bolts are among the competitive products described in our company profile.
Carriage BoltsCarriage bolts (round head with a square neck) are commonly used in wood connections. The square neck under the round head will seat into the hole in the wood to preve...View Product →
Heavy hex bolts are designed for structural and high-load applications. They have larger head dimensions than standard hex bolts, which helps distribute load and improve wrench engagement. Machinery, machine tools, and structural steel work often call for heavy hex bolts in a confirmed grade and coating.

Timber bolts are another important family for wood-to-wood and wood-to-steel connections. They typically have a smooth shank, a domed head, and a nut. Builders and furniture makers choose them when a clean finish and strong clamping force are needed.
Timber BoltsTimber bolts are also referred to as dome head, fender head, mushroom head bolts, mat bolts, mat rods. They are referred to as economy bolts. They are used in marine a...View Product →
Across industries, carbon steel bolts support:
Our customers are based in North America, South America, and Europe. That range means we regularly handle both inch and metric specifications, as well as different coating and documentation expectations.
SINI Fastener is ISO 9001 certified. Our quality control process is built around the standards customers care about most: strength, durability, and reliability. We use a range of inspection equipment to monitor material and finished parts.
Buyers should request a document package that matches the risk of the application. For standard commercial orders, a basic inspection report may be enough. For structural, automotive, or safety-related parts, a fuller package is prudent.
Clear documentation prevents surprises at incoming inspection. It also helps when a project requires traceability from raw material to finished bolt.
Since 2004, SINI Fastener has grown into a fastener manufacturer and exporter serving customers around the world. Our company profile presents us as a leading exporter of bolts and screws, with a focus on standard and custom engineered products. We offer steel and stainless steel options, inch and metric sizes, and production to DIN and IFI standards. Custom manufacturing is available from customer-specific designs and drawings.
